Calculator limitations

Calculator results depend on the values you enter and the formula described on the page. Default values are examples. They are not recommended asset allocations, predictions of returns, expected inflation, or endorsed withdrawal rates.

Most tools use constant returns and inflation, which do not reflect the changing path of actual markets and prices. Unless a page states otherwise, tools do not model taxes, investment losses in a particular sequence, account-access restrictions, contribution limits, required minimum distributions, or changing household needs.

A savings goal based on an initial withdrawal-rate assumption is an illustrative target. It does not calculate a probability of success or prove that a portfolio will support a particular retirement length. The income calculator intentionally models a balance spent down over a chosen period, which differs from a plan designed for uncertain longevity.

Government and workplace rules

Contribution limits, tax treatment, benefit eligibility, and enrollment requirements can change. Information about a particular year should not be assumed to apply to another year. Employer plan provisions can differ even when broad federal rules are the same.

Use official sources such as the IRS, Social Security Administration, Medicare, and your plan documents to verify a rule before relying on it. We are not affiliated with those agencies and do not process their applications or access your records.

Investment risk and external links

Investments can lose value. A positive projected return does not guarantee a positive actual return, and diversification does not eliminate market risk. Past results do not establish what will happen in your situation.
